Transregio „Waves to Weather“

The Karlsruher Institute for Technology (KIT) assert oneself in a competition for a new special research field (SFB). The German Research Community (DGF) supports for example the institution of the new SFB/Transregio "Waves to Weather". The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-TRO) of the KIT is significantly involved in this project. It deals with a new generation of weather forecast.

The aim of the new SFB/Transregio 165 "Waves to Weather (W2W) is to make weather forecasts more accurate and reliable. This works, because scientists of the KIT, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich as coordinator, Technical University Munich (TUM), German Center for aviation and astronautics (DLR) in Munich and the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität (JGU) in Mainz work national together. „The social importance of weather forecast grows, not even because of the energy revolution", illustrated professor Peter Knippertz, head of the working group atmospheric dynamic at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research – field of research: Troposphere (IMK-TRO) of KIT. W2W provides the biggest current challenge in the forecast: the limits of predictability, particulary of undulating air movements, to identify in different situations and to creat for each the physically best prognosis.
