Meteorological Tower at KIT Campus North

The IMK-TRO operates a 200 m meteorological tower at KIT Campus North, which has been measuring continuously since 1972 and is equipped with turbulence resolving instruments for wind, temperature and humidity measurements. The tower is further equipped with sensors from the German Weather Service (DWD) and serves as an ICOS (International Carbon Observation System) anchor station. It provides a database for climate and renewable energy studies.

Location: 49° 5' 33'' N, 8° 25' 33'' O, 110,4 m NN

More precisely, the meteorological instrumentation includes instruments for measuring

  • wind speed (2, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 130, 160, 200 m altitude)
  • wind direction (40, 60, 80, 100, 160, 200 m altitude)
  • wind vector (4, 40, 100, 200 m altitude)
  • temperature (2, 10, 30, 60, 100, 130, 160, 200 m altitude)
  • dew point (2, 10, 30, 100, 200 m altitude)
  • short and long wave radiation
  • surface heat flux
  • precipitation
  • air pressure

The mean and maximum values refer to 10 minute intervals.
