Postdoc position in collaboration with the Scientific Computing Center (SCC)

In the framework of NHR@KIT, a continuous integration, testing, and benchmarking environment for ICON-ART shall be developed.

In November 2020 the Scientific Computing Center (SCC) was selected as centre for national high performance computing (NHR). In the context of our NHR activities and of a collaborative project between the Scientific Computing and Simulation (SCS) department of the SCC and the “Mineral Dust” research group of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research – Department Troposphere Research (IMK-TRO) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), we are looking to expand our team to further-develop the ICON-ART software and to develop a Continuous Integration, Testing, and Benchmarking environment. ICON-ART is a numerical weather prediction and climate modeling system.

  • You analyze the requirements on a test suite for ICON-ART considering also existing approaches.
  • You develop a strategy for the development and application of a new ICON-ART test suite, particularly for the ART module, and contribute to the test suite development.
  • You contribute to advancing the model representation of mineral dust in ICON-ART, e.g. by implementing new parameterizations and through model tests.
  • You publish project results and present those in national and international conferences and workshops.
  • You contribute to knowledge transfer to users through courses and documentation, and you actively participate in events for target user groups and the wider public, e.g. training events, seminars, hackathons, guided tours

The SCC is the information Technology Center of KIT. As a central scientific institution SCC addresses task in research, teaching and innovation and acts as an innovative and agile IT service provider for KIT and external partners.

The department Scientific Computing and Simulation of the SCC operates large scale infrastructures for scientific high performance computing and data-intensive computing. Among others the department operates the recently inaugurated “Hochleistungsrechner Karlsruhe” (HoreKa), one of the fastest computing clusters in Europe.

The Department Troposphere Research is one of four departments of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research at KIT. It is renowned for excellent research on, e.g., aerosols, dynamic meteorology, regional climate, and cloud physics. The research group “Mineral Dust” is a Helmholtz Young Investigator Group that aims to better quantify the mineral dust cycle and its impacts using theory, modeling, as well as field and laboratory experiments.

Qualifications:

  • You have successfully completed a university degree (Diplom (Uni)/Master) in computer science, meteorology, physics or a similar field including a PhD
  • You have profound experience in (scientific) software development, ideally in an HPC environment, and have experience with modern or established programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C++, Python, etc.)
  • You are interested in the research field of meteorology and climate research.
  • Ideally you already have prior knowledge in the fields of numerical modeling or atmospheric physics
  • Experiences with modern, agile software engineering methods (DevOps, e.g. continuous testing, deployment) are advantageous.
  • You have a very good knowledge of English (written and oral).

In addition to these qualifications sense of initiative, working in a team and creativity as well as conceptual and strategic thinking are very important for us.
