Peter Knippertz new talent scout of the Humboldt Foundation

Prof. Peter Knippertz was selected as a scout in the Henriette Herz Program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and can now directly propose foreign researchers for a Humboldt Research Fellowship at KIT.

The selection committee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation granted Prof. Peter Knippertz proposal rights in the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme. As a selected scout, he can now take personal responsibility for recruiting two talented, international junior researchers for his own work group and the Humboldt Network.

"This is a fantastic new opportunity to bring new talents to KIT quickly, easily, and unbureaucratically. We will put our focus on African researchers, for whom stays at European universities contribute significantly to the further development of the scientific landscape," says Knippertz shortly after the new scouts were named. "In Africa in particular, there is a huge need for research to better adapt to climate change and extreme weather events. Here we can make important contributions and expand our international network."

By introducing the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme, financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has opened up a new way of accessing the Humboldt Research Fellowship. This new, active scouting procedure enables successful academics in Germany to directly approach highly sought-after candidates from abroad and invite them to conduct joint research at their institutions. Both in terms of subject and region, the programme thus recruits new collaborative partners for Germany. It also seeks to increase the percentage of women sponsored under the Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme.

In order to recruit these scientific talents from abroad for research stays, the Humboldt Foundation wants to utilize the knowledge, international connections and commitment of selected researchers in Germany: every year, in a competitive peer-review process, the Humboldt Foundation will select up to 40 scouts who will then themselves identify junior researchers abroad and recommend them to the Foundation. In this way, up to 100 additional Humboldt Research Fellowships will be granted annually.
