Fascinating Insights into Meteorology and Climate Research

During the Open House and Campus Day at KIT, the institutes IMKASF and IMKTRO welcomed all those interested in weather, climate, and climate change—or in studying meteorology and climate physics.
Visitors were treated to captivating insights: At our presentation globe, researchers showcased stunning visualizations—ranging from volcanic eruptions and Saharan dust to the ozone layer and global satellite measurements. These displays vividly illustrated how such phenomena influence our atmosphere and how small, local uncertainties in observations can quickly grow into major deviations that may impact weather forecasts across the entire Northern Hemisphere.
Just next door, guests had the chance to witness live demonstrations of how greenhouse gases are measured in the atmosphere. A crowd favorite was the personalized weather simulation for one’s own birthday—a highlight that delighted both young and old.
For younger guests, the knowledge quest turned into a playful journey of discovery. Using puzzles and building blocks, children created their own small models and learned how scientists represent data in simulations, what “resolution” means, and how valuable insights can be derived from these models. A fun and educational experience for curious minds of all ages!
Prospective students received in-depth information about the degree programs in meteorology and climate physics. Expert talks—such as the one by Prof. Andreas Fink on heatwaves—sparked additional interest and enthusiasm for the field.
One of the most popular attractions was the extreme weather rating scale presented by the South German Climate Office. Here, visitors could assess which weather events they personally found most intense. The program was rounded out with engaging explanations and lectures on climate phenomena, the greenhouse effect, and current climate research.
A heartfelt thank you to the organizing team and to everyone who stopped by—we truly appreciated the great interest shown on this special day!
